It has come to my attention that the word bobbin in the world of fiber can be confusing. There are a lot of particular products that are called "bobbins". If you're new to the world of fiber, that can be a bit of a stumbling block. 

This post contains photos of the fiber things that are most likely being referred to. You'll be able to make an educated guess if you know whether the speaker is discussing a tapestry, fabric weaving, sewing, or spinning project. All of them are things that hold yarn in some form or another.

Ten years of blogging about tapestry weaving

Ten years ago today I started this blog. It hardly feels like that long. It began as a way to encourage myself to focus on tapestry weaving as a vocation while I was still working in health care. Through the blog I've discovered a vibrant community of weavers and people interested in fiber art. This community has been instrumental in my development as an artist and a lover of yarn.

Today I'm a full time artist and educator and I get to spend all day every day working on something related to tapestry weaving.

I frequently get questions in my online classes about which yarns to use for tapestry weaving. To answer that question, you have to think about what sorts of imagery you want to weave and at what sett. Of course I can give you a list of my favorite yarns, but I may be looking for different characteristics in my weaving than you are. Knowing how sett and yarn interact will allow you to make the best choices for what you want to accomplish in terms of image creation and the look and feel of the resulting fabric.

How does sett affect image?

When someone says they’re weaving at 8 epi, that is the sett. That means they have 8 warp strands in one inch. I define sett a bit more in my last blog post on this topic. 

Weaving is a gridded structure. The images we make have to fit onto the grid formed by the warp and weft.

Because the structure so easily forms squares, making other shapes is more challenging in tapestry weaving. But of course we do want to weave something besides squares!
